Sat, Feb 29, 8:33 PM- Hey! It’s Luiza👋
Sat, Feb 29, 8:35 PM- Did you find that paper sample book?
Sat, Feb 29, 8:35 PM- Hey! Yes we got it 👍
Sat, Feb 29, 8:36 PM- Sweet; lets get this thread rollin'
Sat, Feb 29, 8:36 PM- Hehe yes!
Sat, Feb 29, 8:37 PM- OK so I want to ask you about your time working at a factory over the summer
Sat, Feb 29, 8:37 PM- Can you tell me where you were and what the factory was like?
Sat, Feb 29, 8:46 PM- The factory is at the border of France and Germany, between a highway and a shopping mall where they just moved to have more space. The business with implants is going so well that they could rent out a huge office building where half of the space was left empty.. "there will be some fully automated wash- and packaging infrastructure on some of the empty floors..", I was told. The day was spent loading machines so they get going cutting implants day and night out of some specially treated titanium that is worth the price of gold.
Sat, Feb 29, 8:47 PM- Wow! It sounds straight out of a movie
Sat, Feb 29, 8:48 PM- How did you hear of this factory?
Sat, Feb 29, 8:49 PM- It was Summer of 2019 and you were finishing up a semester of school when you got in touch with them?
Sat, Feb 29, 8:51 PM- Right. I needed a money job for the summer and my friend told me to come work in this factory. I didnt know what I applied for really; she mentioned that the work is simple and well paid. I ended up working in the basment in the plate department while my friend was on the third floor sorting screws all day so we could at least meet once in the coffee break which was nice. I got to know her co-workers as well, mostly men in their 30ies and 40ies who worked as car mechanics before and switched later to medical technology.
Sat, Feb 29, 8:51 PM- Have you ever worked with heavy machinery before?
Sat, Feb 29, 8:56 PM- I have never! All my jobs so far have been "at the office" including the "getting coffee" internship... so I guess the machines I've interacted with the most are copiers, scanners and printers. Oh and computers!
Sat, Feb 29, 8:57 PM- I got into researching women and machines by looking into the 914 copier which was the first Xerox product that allowed for quick, dry copies on any kind of paper in just 6 seconds.
Sat, Feb 29, 8:58 PM- I was reading an article on the New Yorker about Xerox and found the craziest quote about women and the 914s... let me find it
Sat, Feb 29, 8:59 PM- Oh yes I'm curious! What was again the main reason for showing the copiers always with women?
Sat, Feb 29, 8:59 PM- So the article said: "I spent a couple of afternoons with one 914 and its operator, and observed what seemed to be the closest relationship between a woman and a piece of office equipment that I had ever seen.", "...a 914 has distinct animal traits: it has to be fed and curried; it is intimidating but can be tamed; it is subject to unpredictable bursts of misbehavior; and, generally speaking, it responds in kind to its treatment."
Sat, Feb 29, 9:00 PM- So women worked as secretaries in the 60s and became the companions for these copy machines…
Sat, Feb 29, 9:01 PM- I guess it was cheaper to hire a woman to do it at the time
Sat, Feb 29, 9:02 PM
Sat, Feb 29, 9:02 PM- This is an old ad
Sat, Feb 29, 9:03 PM- Xerox wanted to convey that it was easy to operate the copiers… “so easy that even a woman could do it” :(
Sat, Feb 29, 9:03 PM- Wow... "Easy to handle" that seemed to be their slogan...
Sat, Feb 29, 9:03 PM- Right 😥
Sat, Feb 29, 9:04 PM- I guess it’s not news that women were seen this way… but I thought it was especially interesting to look at the relationship between this machine and the women who worked at the office
Sat, Feb 29, 9:05 PM- Were they buddies or enemies… or what was going on there
Sat, Feb 29, 9:05 PM- How did you feel when working with machinery at the factory?
Sat, Feb 29, 9:05 PM- What was interesting with the heavy machinery in the factory was that the guys explained me the interface and process so they let me navigate them. They were so surprised I can do it.. even though its just follow a few commands and voilà it's running.
Sat, Feb 29, 9:06 PM- Are there a lot of women who work there?
Sat, Feb 29, 9:06 PM- Not in the factory part.. more in the office.
Sat, Feb 29, 9:06 PM- All the women did quality control; all men machinery
Sat, Feb 29, 9:07 PM- And they all had their machines so they were very attached. "This is DC210, my baby you know.."
Sat, Feb 29, 9:07 PM- Hahaha
Sat, Feb 29, 9:08 PM- Kind of cute
Sat, Feb 29, 9:08 PM- When I’m printing on the riso and it jams I say “she doesn’t like that paper”
Sat, Feb 29, 9:08 PM- Hehe
Sat, Feb 29, 9:08 PM- Oh haha it's a her!
Sat, Feb 29, 9:09 PM- Hahaha
Sat, Feb 29, 9:09 PM- How were the days like at the factory?
Sat, Feb 29, 9:09 PM- (Lol it seemed like we’re talking about Andy Warhol for a sec)
Sat, Feb 29, 9:10 PM- We do like to think of our devices as almost another human being sometimes..
Sat, Feb 29, 9:10 PM- Yes! He made the factory fashionable.
Sat, Feb 29, 9:10 PM- The days were long because the work was always the same and super repetitive.
Sat, Feb 29, 9:11 PM- But more active than computer work; at least you could feel your body after work.. (not just lower back pain lol)
Sat, Feb 29, 9:11 PM- Oh man I was just going to say
Sat, Feb 29, 9:12 PM- What were your tasks like?
Sat, Feb 29, 9:14 PM- Washing the implants with specific rocks so the sharp edges were soft. Then counting them, wash them bring them to the next production step.
Sat, Feb 29, 9:15 PM- Sometimes also on the press
Sat, Feb 29, 9:15 PM- Bending the implants so they fit the bone it will be applied to
Sat, Feb 29, 9:16 PM- We fabricated up to 260 implant pieces; all for bone fractures
Sat, Feb 29, 9:16 PM- They were implants for different parts of the body?
Sat, Feb 29, 9:18 PM- Yeah; they started with face implants but today they do for any part of the body
Sat, Feb 29, 9:18 PM- It’s so fascinating…
Sat, Feb 29, 9:19 PM- I was wondering if our classmate who had an accident (sorry Milo) got some implants that I fabricated.. 😬
Sat, Feb 29, 9:19 PM- Oh wow! That’s a good question… so this factory is the top factory for body implants? They make most of them?
Sat, Feb 29, 9:20 PM- Not most of them but I would say the really high-end ones
Sat, Feb 29, 9:20 PM- Apparently
Sat, Feb 29, 9:21 PM- Do you remember how you felt when you started working there? Were you surprised with everything?
Sat, Feb 29, 9:21 PM- I think Saudi Arabia bought almost all the implants they had in storage in once
Sat, Feb 29, 9:21 PM- Whoa
Sat, Feb 29, 9:21 PM- at once*
Sat, Feb 29, 9:21 PM- Yeah
Sat, Feb 29, 9:22 PM- I learnt so much in this little time about the body and the technology in general.. I would go back in a second
Sat, Feb 29, 9:23 PM- I do need a coffee break now haha
Sat, Feb 29, 9:23 PM- Haha I was just gonna say
Sat, Feb 29, 9:23 PM- ☕
Sat, Feb 29, 9:23 PM- I’m coming to the studio for the opening! See ya soon, talk later 🤪
Sat, Feb 29, 9:23 PM- Sweet! See you there then :)
Mon, Mar 2, 4:59 PM- I read this morning in NSA's magazine called Cryptolog from July 1976, Vol. III: "Quite apart from the fact that the subject matter as such is foreign to a woman's mentality, it must br added that it is extremely difficult for most women to engage in work which no work must be spoken".
Mon, Mar 2, 10:09 PM- Oh wow this is nuts… how did you find the magazine?
Mon, Mar 2, 10:22 PM- Oh and I wanted to ask you also: do you have any factory pics? 🙃
Mon, Mar 2, 10:38 PM- I am trying to find the designer who did it.. but the information is concealed so it needs some digging 😅
Mon, Mar 2, 10:41 PM
Mon, Mar 2, 10:41 PM- Walther Trowal.. named after the engineer who built it
Mon, Mar 2, 10:42 PM- It's a huge implant washing machine
Mon, Mar 2, 10:45 PM- 👀👀👀
Tue, Mar 3, 5:48 PM
Tue, Mar 3, 5:48 PM
Tue, Mar 3, 5:49 PM
Tue, Mar 3, 5:49 PM
Tue, Mar 3, 5:51 PM- Some more impressions
Tue, Mar 3, 5:55 PM- Wow machines everywhere and not a single window in sight!
Tue, Mar 3, 5:55 PM- This was the basement?
Tue, Mar 3, 6:02 PM- Yes no windows
Tue, Mar 3, 6:02 PM- 😢
Tue, Mar 3, 6:02 PM- It was a crazy hot summer so I was kind of happy of being im a cool basement 😅
Wed, Mar 4, 1:17 AM- We were talking a bit about this today IRL: how do you think spending this summer with these machines impacted your work?
Thu, Mar 5, 12:54 PM- I can try to formulate some thought around this.. but in general I felt like I had a lot of time to talk and reflect while the machines were doing the work in the facory. Opposite to the open office.. which all of a sudden felt more like a factory than an actual factory. Everyone behind a screen and the body is just a stand.
Thu, Mar 5, 12:55 PM- You mentioned that you were looking into performance art done by wome and machines; could you find something so far?
Thu, Mar 5, 12:55 PM- Yes!
Thu, Mar 5, 12:56 PM- I mentioned it to the professor of American Performance in the 70s—the academic class I’m taking this semester, he’s thinking on it
Thu, Mar 5, 12:56 PM- Nothing came to mind immediately… but he pointed me to someone who might know.
Thu, Mar 5, 12:56 PM- Oh great!
Thu, Mar 5, 12:56 PM- It’s crazy to think that this kind of woman-and-machine duet hasn’t been fully explored in art, isn’t it…
Thu, Mar 5, 12:56 PM- I’m sure it has and we just don’t know hehehe
Thu, Mar 5, 12:57 PM- I really like your thoughts on working physically with machines and how that makes you aware of yourself and your body
Thu, Mar 5, 12:58 PM- That doesn’t happen “at the office” with computers…
Thu, Mar 5, 1:00 PM- I thought we could each sit by one printer in the studio and then print messages to each other
Thu, Mar 5, 1:00 PM- Haha
Thu, Mar 5, 1:00 PM- Rough idea!
Thu, Mar 5, 1:05 PM- Haha yes let's try that! Maybe we could sit together tonight and brainstorm a bit and see what comes out.. maybe we find a way to make the printer speak..
Thu, Mar 5, 1:05 PM- 👀 Yes
Thu, Mar 5, 1:06 PM- K talk tonight!
Mon, Mar 9, 1:26 PM- Steiner pointed me to Pati Hill who made a lot of work with photocopiers in the 60s and 70s. IBM loaned her an IBM Copier II in 77 for 2 years and she had it in her come in Connecticut.
Mon, Mar 9, 1:27 PM- She refers to her work as a conversation with the photocopier… thinking of the machine as autonomous.
Mon, Mar 9, 1:27 PM- “This stocky, unrevealing box stands 3 ft. high without stockings or feet and lights up like a Xmas tree no matter what I show it. It repeats my words perfectly as many times as I ask it to, but when I show it a hair curler it hands me back a space ship, and when I show it the inside of a straw hat it describes the eerie joys of a descent into a volcano.”
Mon, Mar 9, 1:31 PM- This makes me think of what we were talking about earlier: how to let the machine take over somehow…
Mon, Mar 9, 1:47 PM- “Making copies is very near to speaking.”
Mon, Mar 9, 9:43 PM- So cool! Let the machines speak
Mon, Mar 9, 9:46 PM- I read about how she started experimenting with the photocopier... "One recounts her surprise at noticing images of fingertips in the margins of her copied manuscripts. Another describes her impulse to use the machine to document a collection of household items before discarding them".
Mon, Mar 9, 9:46 PM- Maybe Yale has some work from her in the Beinecke?
Mon, Mar 9, 9:47 PM- Yes! I got it for us hehe
Mon, Mar 9, 9:47 PM- Pearl!
Mon, Mar 9, 9:47 PM- 🤠
Mon, Mar 9, 9:48 PM- Maybe our goal undercover mission the make our copiers talk, but maybe visually. Still having the live-streaming idea in mind...
Mon, Mar 9, 9:48 PM- But we can of course expand on that
Mon, Mar 9, 9:49 PM- Totally
Mon, Mar 9, 9:49 PM- I wonder if there are portable photo copiers too.. imagine we could take them for a walk 😅
Mon, Mar 9, 9:51 PM- Hahaha
Mon, Mar 9, 9:51 PM- I'll look into it!
Mon, Mar 9, 9:53 PM- 🖨️💜
Tue, Mar 10, 2:43 PM- https://thenewinquiry.com/blog/the-work-of-art-in-the-age-of-xerox-reproduction/
Tue, Mar 10, 2:44 PM- So pretty
Tue, Mar 10, 2:44 PM
Tue, Mar 10, 2:46 PM- “radical accessibility” !
Tue, Mar 10, 2:47 PM- I’m looking into ways of live-streaming the printers with the tiny cameras we were talking about
Tue, Mar 10, 2:47 PM- Have you heard of ISCA? International Society of Copier Artists.. so great
Tue, Mar 10, 2:48 PM- Sweet! Maybe we get some to test and then we could return them after?
Tue, Mar 10, 2:48 PM- Yes, ISCA! Women majority, also!
Tue, Mar 10, 2:49 PM- So it looks like it’d be best to use a webcamera so we can livestream easily… I don’t know if the tiny ones will allow us to do it
Tue, Mar 10, 2:49 PM- Can’t find any info online… :(
Tue, Mar 10, 2:49 PM- I wonder if we could test with cameras we have in the Atrium and then go from there/
Tue, Mar 10, 2:50 PM- Ah I see; webcams sounds good too
Tue, Mar 10, 2:51 PM- Maybe we can put an ipad with a camera upside down to test?
Tue, Mar 10, 2:51 PM- Hahahaha yes
Tue, Mar 10, 2:51 PM- Think Rok has a webcam too, we can ask! And I have a GoPro that I think can turn into webcam
Tue, Mar 10, 2:52 PM- Are you around later today?
Tue, Mar 10, 2:52 PM- Great!
Tue, Mar 10, 2:53 PM- I will come back tomorrow; will check out some galleries today
Tue, Mar 10, 2:53 PM- Down to try!
Tue, Mar 10, 2:53 PM- K cool, I’ll be there tomorrow and we can try things out 🤗 Have fun!
Tue, Mar 10, 2:54 PM- Sounds like a plan!! SeeU!
Tue, Mar 10, 11:07 PM
Tue, Mar 10, 11:07 PM
Tue, Mar 10, 11:07 PM
Tue, Mar 10, 11:07 PM- Just saw this book.. type/poetry experimentation with a manipulated printer
Tue, Mar 10, 11:10 PM- Oh wow! Perfect
Tue, Mar 10, 11:11 PM- Prosthetics + printers???!!!
Tue, Mar 10, 11:11 PM- That’s such a specific reference to our conversation!
Tue, Mar 10, 11:12 PM- I knooooow; all I want haha
Tue, Mar 10, 11:12 PM
Tue, Mar 10, 11:12 PM
Tue, Mar 10, 11:15 PM- Some results that came out of that funny printer...

Tue, Mar 24, 6:23 PM- Hey! Nice to hear from you here again :) Hard to keep going on stuff these days… thanks for sending along
Tue, Mar 24, 6:28 PM- Totally... Its so disturbing!
Tue, Mar 24, 6:28 PM- Yeah, things are messed up :(
Tue, Mar 24, 6:28 PM- Is Diversions that pdf that keeps on going with things added to it forever? Or that’s another thing?
Tue, Mar 24, 6:29 PM- Not sure tbh; just discovered it now
Tue, Mar 24, 6:29 PM- Remember that pdf you told me about?
Tue, Mar 24, 6:30 PM- I forget what it was called
Tue, Mar 24, 6:30 PM- But it keeps changing, the author keeps adding?
Tue, Mar 24, 6:30 PM- Aaah no that was Dispersion by Seth Price
Tue, Mar 24, 6:30 PM- Another thing
Tue, Mar 24, 6:30 PM- Oh!!! I gotta read that

Wed, Apr 1, 8:24 PM- And it can print what I tell it to if I type “lp [file-name]”
Wed, Apr 1, 8:24 PM- But it doesn’t have a lot to say so far... lol
Wed, Apr 1, 8:24 PM- Hahaha great idea
